A Photographer’s Perspective - When the Camera is Flipped
In 2022 during a class the mentor said something to the group that resonated with me. “Your homework is to book a photographer and have your picture taken”. Of course as a photographer, I spend most of my time behind the camera - carefully composing my workflows, guiding my families, seniors, and newborn, and capturing their most cherished moments. But ever since 2022, I make it a priority to step in front of the lens myself (with or without my family). It has become a tradition that keeps me connected to what my families, seniors, and yes even my schools experience. This year was no exception, and I wanted to share my personal journey, from outfit selection to the final outcome, and why I believe this practice makes me a better photographer for each one of my families, seniors, and schools.
Experiencing Both Sides of the Lens
Even as a professional, I feel the emotions before a photo session. The anticipation of creating beautiful images is thrilling, but the thought of being on the other side of the camera can be nerve-wracking. The feelings I experience a few weeks ago is exactly why I booked a headshot video session for myself so that I can remember what each of you feel.
The Photography Retreat that Inspired Me
The beginning of March I had the most amazing opportunity to attend The Rest Conference, a retreat designed specifically for photographers. It was a beautiful time to learn, connect with other incredibly photographers, and reset my creative journey in this business. A year ago, I had no idea what The Rest Conference was all about until I noticed a photographer friend that was attending as a speaker - Becca Jean Photography. I met Becca a few years ago at another retreat and have been inspired and motivated to grow not just as a photographer but as a business woman. She is an extremely talented and has the best heart. After booking The Rest Conference, I decided to take this opportunity of being in the same zip code as Becca and hired her to take a headshot video me. I have been wanting this video on my website for awhile and decided to take a leap and booked Becca. The camera is now flipped on me. Oh the rush of feelings that have just started. So, I decided to take my advice that I strive to provided to each of my families and seniors.
Choosing the Perfect Outfit - Time to Get Dressed!
Choosing what to wear can be truly daunting. Fun but definitely daunting. I know that my clothing reflects me but I also wanted to show my families and seniors that our clothing can also make you feel comfortable and confident. Before shopping I decided to dig deep and come up with a theme or word that would embody how I want each of you to feel with me during your photography session. Classy with a twist of silliness and relaxation. Yes, this is it! Each of my galleries definitely has a foundation of classy with splash of giggles, laughter, hugs, and family fun. Feeling comfortable and confident translates beautifully in photos. As a boutique photography business owner, I knew that I wanted to support a local company and decided to shop at Mode and Mercantile. The one-on-one guidance from Mode and Mercantile made me feel seen and confident in my selection of a dress. After I said YES to the dress, I wanted to add depth and versatility to my look and went shopping in my own closet. How many times do we book a photo session and think “I have to go spend money on clothes” - so not true. Go shopping in your own closet! I found accessories to help me out. Jean jacket that I borrowed from a friend - girl friends closets are the best. A hat and jewelry options to change up the look. Layering with your outfits adds variety to all your images. Next up make-up, I have always been a minimalist when it comes to make-up, but I knew I wanted a little extra coverage for my photos. I desperately wanted to have a smoother complexion and adding enough color to my eyes. Staying Local - I visited Image By Lisa, for expert advice. Lisa was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, listening to my minimalist approach to make-up. So I felt so ready for this experience on the other side of the lens.
Overcoming my unexpected Nerves
I have been taking pictures since 2011 but the unexpected nerves I had on the “day of” was enlightening. The beginning of the session I felt a lot like how many of you describe to me - excited yet anxious. My heart raced a little as I met Becca in the lobby of the hotel. I remember giving her a big smile and sharing with her my “theme” for the video. In the same breath, told her I was nervous. She smiled back and simple said You look gorgeous! Becca’s warm personality and expert guidance instantly put me at ease. Over the next 30 minutes my nerves slowly floated away. I was feeling more at easy in my own skin and having so much fun. Becca’s calm and reassuring positive words continued to keep my me relaxed.
Why This Matters To Me
Having the camera flipped around on me reminds me why I love what I do. It deepens my empathy for each of you and helps me refine how I guide you during your photo sessions. I know what it feels like to be unsure about where to put your hands, or how to stand, or wondering if my outfit will look good in the pictures as it felt like in the mirror. Furthermore, I know the joy of seeing the final images - ones that reflect YOU at this stage of life. Know deep down in my core, that I strive to do what Becca did for me, make you all feel welcomed, relaxed, a safe place to allow each of your family to feel like yourself. As an artist, I desire to connect, capture, and cherish all of these moments with you. The final gallery of images is worth it! Down the road, you won’t remember the nervous feelings but you will remember how your child’s fingers held your hand, or how your family loved to giggle together. Thank you to Becca for this amazing Video Headshot. I will forever be grateful for her talent!
